The Vienna Clockmaker's Song

I know the way to make time run
The spiral dance of coiled springs and gears —
This measures what the stars have spun.

I made the clocktower, second to none.
At perfect noon my automaton appears.
I know the way to make time run.

They say that time cannot be outrun
But I have fastened screws through days and years
And measured what the stars have spun.

Only God could match what we have done —
We direct in metal what we fear.
I know the way to make time run.

A circle neither ended nor begun
The watch hands tick the heartbeat of the spheres.
They measure what the stars have spun.

Someday Iíll build a clock to face the sun
And show the angels what mankind engineers.
I know the way to make time run
And measure what the stars have spun.
